Dispatches from Coachella: T-Minus 4 Days!

Lots of friends of Soludos are headed out to Palm Springs in a few days to dance in the desert and celebrate the start of warm weather (finally). Here they clue us in as to what they’re packing, listening and looking forward to as they prepare for Coachella. Keep an eye out for more, including photos and reports back from the action.

Q: Are you a Coachella first-timer?
A: This year will make my 3rd Coachella.

Q: What essentials are going in your Coachella survival bag?
A: I’ve never had a survival bag. I guess I need to get on that. If I did it would have very boring practical things in it like Advil, water, mints, chapstick, a Quest bar, and sunglasses.

Q: What’s your take on Coachella style?
A:  Love it or hate it, it’s the best people watching and has totally taken on a life of its own. I think it’s great when I see a really uptight New Yorker that I know suddenly wearing a torn tube top and daisy dukes. It’s also much needed precursor to mentally gearing up for summer.

Q: Which bands are you most excited to dance to?
A:  My favorite bands are playing this year! Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Blur, Modest Mouse, Of Monsters and Men,Two Door Cinema Club, New Order, Phoenix, Grimes,Tegan & Sara!

Q: Who’s headed to Coachella with you?
A:  Third-wheelin’ it with my dears Kate Bosworth and Michael Polish!

Q: Any tips for spending a weekend in the desert?
A: Go with the flow, drink a lot of water, don’t only hangout with other New Yorkers in a circle in the VIP area. Go out and actually listen to music and dance!

Q: Favorite Coachella memory?
A: Who What Wear’s Hilary Kerr once sold a gold paper crown that I was wearing to a drunk gentleman for about fifty dollars. The man gave it to his girlfriend.

Q: What songs are on your playlist for the journey to Coachella?
A: “Elephant (Todd Rundgren Remix)” – Tame Impala; “I Dig Rock Roll and Roll Music” – Peter, Paul & Mary; “Entertainment” – Phoenix; “Playing for Keeps” – Elle King; “Win Win” – Victim featuring Blaqstarr; “California Soul” – Marlena Shaw Diplo remix; “Nothing But Time” – Catpower featuring Iggy Pop; “Genesis” – Grimes

Q: Are you a Coachella first timer?
A: No, but I have been before and had such a blast – looking so forward to it this year as well!

Q: What essentials are going in your Coachella survival bag?
A: I would say my Coachella essentials start with summer basics. Indio Valley can get so hot, so I will have a baseball hat or wide brimmed sun hat, some fun/bright sunglasses and sun screen.  A real key is to get comfortable shoes and this year I picked out a few pairs of Soludos. It’s important to wear closed toe shoes because of all the people, your feet will definitely get stepped on. Also, with all of the dancing and standing comfort is very important.

Q:  What’s your take on Coachella style?
A: I think it has become a fashion show in a way. People are trying to see how crazy they can dress, how much they can channel their inner hippies. It’s fun to dress with a theme by wearing things you can’t break out on a regular basis like cropped tops and cutoffs. Last year was very earthy and boho but it seems like fashion has taken a turn towards 90′s glam/grunge so I am curious to see if more people will dress that way.

Q: Which bands are you most excited to dance to?
A: I am excited for everything, even bands I’m not as familiar with are fun to go watch.  I am most looking forward to Passion Pit, Vampire Weekend, Band of Horses, and Phoenix.

Who’s headed to Coachella with you?
A: I went to college in Santa Barbara so I’m expecting to see a lot of familiar faces. Some of my close friends from New York are going with me and my boyfriend is as well!

Any tips for spending a weekend in the desert?
A: Be prepared for the unexpected.  Last year, weekend 1 was cold and weekend 2 was insanely hot. Check the weather before you leave – it can change your entire packing list!  It gets cold at night so bring a sweater- there are lockers to store your items if you don’t want to carry them all day. There are beer tents, rides and some designers throw events, so it’s fun to make the most of it and participate in as much as possible! Drink lots of water because it is SO hot out there during the day and don’t try to bring too much with you into the venue they keep pretty tight security and take things like open bottles.

Favorite Coachella memory?
A: Last year, I was sitting on my boyfriends shoulders about 20 feet from Florence Welch from Florence and the Machine and she was singing her heart out and I was on top of the world- I love her. That was pretty epic.

What songs are on your playlist for the journey to Coachella?
A: I have been trying to listen to some of the bands I’m less familiar with. I really love Tame Impala, Of Monsters & Men and the Lumineers right now. I have had my iPod on the Lumineers Pandora station, which is a great one I’d recommend.

Q: Are you a Coachella first timer?
A: I went to Coachella for one day a few years ago, so essentially yes, I’m a Coachella virgin in terms of the full-weekend, all-in experience.

Q: What essentials are going in your Coachella survival bag?
A: Several pairs of shoes—from a low bootie to a pair of Soludos of course—so I can wear a different pair each day to avoid totally destroying my feet, sunscreen, a few pair of statement sunnies and a Panama hat I recently picked up in Panama!

Q: What’s your take on Coachella style?
A: That it tends to go over the top and people try too hard. The people who look the most chic are the ones who just go with their natural style and look effortless about the whole thing. Think Rosie Huntington Whitley and Kate Bosworth—they never get it wrong.

Q: Which bands are you most excited to dance to?
A: The Lumineers, Band of Horses (I know that isn’t really dance music), Father John Misty and the Chili Peppers.

Q: Who’s headed to Coachella with you?
A: One of my dear friends Jen Weinberg, who works at Glamour!

Q: If you’ve been before – what are your tips for spending a weekend in the desert?
A: Stay hydrated and wear a hat. Oh, and DO NOT wear platform sandals. I made that mistake once—not going to happen again! My feet weren’t the same for weeks.

Q: If you’ve been before – what’s your favorite Coachella memory?
A: Mumford & Sons after the sun went down was a pretty great, memorable show.

Q: What are you most looking forward to?
A: The whole experience—a great weekend in the sun with friends and great music. What’s not to look forward to?

Q: What songs are on your playlist for the journey to Coachella?
A: Not sure about exact songs, but it will be a mix of The Lumineers, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Chili Peppers, Kings of Leon, Pearl Jam, Fleetwood Mac and Jay-Z, because there always needs to be a little Jay-Z.
