Essential Summer Getaway with the Beekman Boys

Summer has finally arrived – and with it, plenty of time to plan perfect weekend getaways. In celebration of vacation season, we sat down with Brent Ridge and Josh Kilmer-Purcell, otherwise known as the Beekman Boys. In case you haven’t heard, they’re the stars of the hit TV show The Fabulous Beekman Boys, founders of the Beekman 1802 brand and the winners of The Amazing Race last year. Sounds exhausting just hearing about it. No wonder then, now that they’ve circled the globe, that Brent and Josh are perfectly happy at home in sleepy, beautiful Sharon Springs, NY. Read on for everything the first time visitor to this charming little town needs to know…

What’s your favorite Summer getaway destination?

At home in Sharon Springs, NY.

Why Sharon Springs?

Sharon Springs is literally a one stop light village and is a perfect weekend destination. There’s almost no one who comes to visit that doesn’t plan another trip before they’ve left. The village is nestled in the Mohawk Valley, said to have some of the richest soil on earth and the area was known as a mystical place for the Iroquois. Modern soothsayers say that the “energies” are so prominent that people are either immediately seduced or immediately repelled. We like to survey guests before they leave.

What’s your favorite place to stay?

The award-winning American Hotel is the epitome of quaint hospitality and has a lively weekend bar scene.

Where do you eat when you’re there? Any favorite restaurants or shops?

One of the village’s newest eatery instills a bit of urban modernism. 204 Main Bar and Bistro serves up creative cuisine using locally-sourced ingredients and just next door is Love Decades, the home decor shop of celebrity designers Roger Hazard and Chris Stout-Hazard.

Any insider tips?

Sharon Springs actually sits atop a vast system of underground caverns. One of the best entry points is just down the road 12 miles at Howe’s Cave. A trip there is essential. Where else (besides maybe Disney World) can you take a boat ride on an underground river?

You should try and visit during one of our Garden Party Festival (June 1 and 2). More information at our website,www.beekman1802.com.

What are your travel essentials – things you won’t leave home without?

We could be fired if we didn’t say Beekman 1802 products.
